NEWS | SHREWSBURY ROADWORKS
Closure of Dogpole, Shrewsbury
Phase three of the Shrewsbury town centre enhancement
scheme is well underway and includes work to improve the
pavements and introduce pedestrian facilities.
Started on 28 January 2008, this phase
follows on from the successful work already completed on
Castle Gates and Wyle Cop.
Due to the narrow nature of the road,
to enable works to be carried out safely, it will be necessary
to close Dogpole to through traffic from the railway station
to it’s junction with Wyle Cop.
Access will be maintained along the
route for essential traffic only, such as local residents,
loading, parking and for emergency vehicles.
In order to maintain this access, Castle
Gates, Castle Street and Dogpole will be two-way, so that
vehicles can access and exit along the same route. Access
to lower Dogpole will be via a right turn from Wyle Cop.
To exit, traffic will need to turn from Dogpole onto High
Street.
Whilst Dogpole is closed, the council
will trial the town centre as a more pedestrian friendly
area by reducing through traffic.
The ‘pedestrian friendly’
trial will mean changes to other traffic flows within the
town. These will include:
· Reverse traffic flow on Town Walls from Murivance
to Wyle Cop.
· Two-way traffic on Claremont Bank and Lower Claremont
Bank.
· One-way traffic up Wyle Cop.
Town Walls from Wyle Cop to Lower Claremont
Bank will also need to be closed to through traffic on Sunday
30 March and Sunday 6 April to allow necessary road marking
changes on this stretch of road.
John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s
Cabinet member for economy and environment, said: “We
have been working closely with stakeholders and local residents
to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum and we
hope that with your patience and co-operation, the works
will run smoothly and efficiently.
“We also hope that this trial
is a success and helps to create a more pleasant environment
for those living in and visiting the town.”

about these works people can visit Shropshire County Council’s
